One of my more re-inforced memories of New Year's Eve was of the big band celebrations, the countdown to the New Year followed by the singing of the first two verses (by a trained singer. Now, they just play the music and the crowd supplies the words, mumbling so that no one is sure exactly what it is that they are singing!).
