Monday word: parterre

parterre (pär-târ′) noun
1. A garden with a formal patttern of beds and paths.
2. The parquet circle:  theater seating at the rear of the main floor, beneath the balconies.

Etymology:  French, par (along or on) + terre (the ground)

Do an image search on parterre and you'll see many fine examples of gardens.
And of course, there's Wikipedia.
