Monday-ish word: saltation

saltation (săl-tā′shən), noun

1. An abrupt variation in the appearance of an organism, usually caused by genetic mutation.
2. The leaping movement of sand or soil particles carried in water or by the wind.
3. An abrupt movement or transition.

Etymology:  from Latin saltare, to leap.
