WHERE did my spelling bee list go Tuesday?

This word won't be of much use to most, but I'm so cross at losing my spelling bee list that I'm just going to cop out and use it.

I remember first hearing this word years ago and I was like WTF! It looks really intimidating at first but it's really easy if you just study it for a second. Humu humu nuku nuku a puaa. Yayyyy.

Marvelous!

Sounds and looks very much like a Finnish word :)

You just have to get those two 'a's and the lack of diphthong on the nuku-a right. It's a kind of fun word to say.

It's Hawaiian :)

Right. There's a glottal stop between the last two As. I actually saw one of these fish when I was snorkeling on Kauai. It was grooooovy.

>.> I really want to use this one while playing hangman. Even if they get the vowels first, likely they'll still be clueless.

hoorah! a word i knew! although yeah, it's usually called a trigger fish in pet stores. my boyfriend lived in hawaii for a while, i think it's the state fish.

[identity profile] sphinxbait.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
can't eat that fish (at least in the states)... it's protected.

Dunno why... there are gads of them in Hawaii, but it's the state fish...
