Xanthippe

Proper Noun: Wife Of the Greek philosopher Socrates
Noun: An ill-tempered woman; a shrew.

Etymology - (which amusingly has no bearing on the definition!)
Greek: Xanthippos, a compound of xanthos "yellow" + hippos "horse."

The definition is historical; Xanthippe is storied to have been a termagant.

Example:
My wife, a Xanthippe, calls me at work to tell me I can't possibly be working hard enough, since I am taking personal calls.

[livejournal.com profile] flaming_tyger, Thanks for letting me have Friday.

When I was a child I thought it would be really cool to know all the words that began with a particular letter. I was lazy and picked 'X', the dictionary only had 14 entries for that. I still look up every X word I can find.
X's are fun, but don't worry I won't be posting one every week (although I do love the words 'Xerophthalmia' and 'Xhosa')
