Happy Monday all! I've been shamefully MIA these past two weeks so today you get three words instead of one. As usual all three words are in the one usage sentence at the bottom of the entry.


Griffonage
noun


Pronunciation:
[grif-on-ij] or [grif-on-ahj]

Definition:
Illegible or careless handwriting.

 

Etymology:
Unfortunately there is no link to the mythical beast and how it may or may not have struggled to wield a pen on paper. Griffonage comes directly from the French griffonner meaning to scribble or scrawl.

 

 

Acronycal
adjective


Pronunciation:
[acron-i-kal]

Definition:
Occuring at sunset

 

Etymology:
From the Greek akronychos meaning at sunset.

 

 

 

Eisegesis
noun


Pronunciation:
[ahy-si-jee-sis] (EYE-si-jee-sis)

Definition:
A highly subjective, bias interpretation of a text so that it introduces the reader's own ideas rather than draw out the intended meaning. Common in biblical scriptures.

 

Etymology:
From the Greek eis- meaning into, plus hegeisthai meaning to lead.

 

Notes:
One who practices eisegesis is known as an eisegete. This is a term used derogatively.

The antonym, meaning to draw from the text, is exegesis.

 

 Usage:
" During the day McSaucy wrote rather legibly for a doctor but as sunset drew nearer his handwriting turned into utter griffonage. This fact did not slip passed his assistant, avid twilight fan Deloris. Her eisegesis was that McSaucy's acronycal regression was due to his being a hunky vampire. Her justification of this was the amount of times she was able to make out the word "blood" in his scrawl. She happily disregarded the many bottles of tequila in his trash bin and the fact that he lay intoxicated and agroof on the hospital beds most subsequent evenings."
