Etymology. Obscure, also spelled elengeness. First used prior to 1379. I wasn't able to find a lot on this one but elenge, meaning sorrowful, full of trouble, seems to derive from the Anglo-Saxon ellende (foreign, strange) and the German elend (miserable)
Usage:
Mine own sweetheart, these shall be to advertise you of the great elengenes that I find here since your departing - for I ensure you methinketh the time longer since your departing now last than I was wont to do a whole fortnight. Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn, summer 1528
