It's Wednesday again, which means another installment of Shakespearean Imagination!
As we gear up for the 2012 Summer Olympics, I’m not sure how many folks have been watching the trials, the Torch Relay, or any of the other associated pomp and circumstance surrounding the Games. As I’ve been watching, I am struck by the sheer amount of product placement. I’ll keep my politics and meta-y thoughts on that to myself, and simply tell you that today’s word is:
advertising : ad•ver•tis•ing /ˈadvərˌtīziNG/ (noun)(verb) :
noun
- The activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services.
verb
- Describe or draw attention to (a product, service, or event) in a public medium in order to promote sales or attendance.
- Seek to fill (a vacancy) by placing a public notice
Synonyms as a noun: advertisement - publicity - ad
Synonyms as a verb: announcing - publicising - notifying
First seen in Shakespeare's Measure For Measure (written 1604-1605). The full text of the play may be found here.
Interestingly, Shakespeare appears to have used the word – in this specific context – as an adjective.
