Greetings, neighbours!

It's Wednesday again, which means another installment of Shakespearean Imagination!

We are in the final days of the countdown to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London! Even if sports aren’t your cup of tea, I hope everyone catches a bit of the games and some of the pomp and circumstance that go along with them. My personal favourite pageantry are the Opening Ceremonies, so I’m certainly looking forward to Friday! In the spirit of the festivities, today’s word is:

Olympian : o•lym•pi•an /əˈlimpēən/ (adjective)(noun) :

adjective
- Associated with Mount Olympus in northeastern Greece, or with the Greek gods whose home was there.

noun
- Any of the twelve Greek gods regarded as living on Mount Olympus
-A participant athlete in the Olympic games.

Synonyms: none
some sources use ‘heavenly’ or ‘celestial’ as synonyms, but I think that’s misattributed

First seen in Shakespeare's King Henry VI, Part III (written 1590-1591). The full text of the play may be found here.

Interestingly, Shakespeare’s context used the word as an adjective, in a specific reference to the Olympian games. May the true spirit of the modern Olympics bring our world closer together in these troubled times.
