I originally considered posting one or more names of New Zealand parrots: kaka, kakapo, kakariki,and kea, all Maori in origin.
(Apparently the kea has been witnessed using its beak to harvest fat from the backs of live sheep!)
Then I read that all the naturally-occurring parrot species in New Zealand are endemic to that country: they are found nowhere else.
Likewise, all of New Zealand's reptiles, amphibians, and bats are endemic.
Etymology: Greek, from endemos, native, or belonging ot a place or people, from en (in) + demos (people, district).
