Amimia is the impairment or loss of the ability to communicate non-verbally, whether via gesturing (motor amimia) or facial expression (facial amimia). It is associated with brain damage, particularly that caused by Parkinson's disease.



North Royalton, Ohio resident Ashwin Veeramani tied for 33rd place after misspelling amimia in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee. He's back this year, though, cheered on by his older sister, 2010 champion Anamika Veeramani!
