Awareness of one's own existence as an entity in time; the ability to experience time as a series of subjective episodes.
Etymology: Greek, auto, self, + noesis, understanding. First used by Endel Tulving in the early 1980s
I encountered the word in the book I'm currently reading (Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans de Waal),
in relation to the question of whether non-human animals make plans for the future.
