I wish I knew exactly when the ban on Christianity in Japan was promulgated so that I could get a proper start on my essay, but I guess I'll just have to research it like a normal student.

1587, for Toyotomi Hideyoshi's first restrictions anyway -- it was a series of increasingly harsh measures ending with being officially outlawed in 1632.
