My art classes continue to be a great source of words! A stenter, sometimes called a tenter is a device for heating, drying and finishing processed fabric. The machines go back hundreds of years and of course, today they are automated.
Interestingly enough, "to be on tenterhooks" or a great state of anxiety and unease, derives from hooks used on a stenter. A tenterhook is a nail or hook on the sides of the frame that cloth was stretched over.
