Fandom Fifty 2025: Post #17

Quick and dirty post about one of the best tropes, good old fashioned soap opera style wedding crashing.

Its tacky, its cliche, its literally the least realistic thing any human being would do. But alas I don't watch soap operas for realism. I barely watch them for the plot. The few British soaps I indulge in scratch such a primal itch for a specific kind of entertainment. I'm here to see one insane couple I root for absolutely terrorize each other until the end of time. I want to see them hold each other at gunpoint again. I want hostage taking. I want love declarations. I want hate declarations. I want blackmail. I want co-dependency. I want more affairs and stolen kisses and stupid horrible angst where they pretend to get over each other.

And I'm pretty sure I'm going to be well fed by Emmerdale this summer if the first scenes are anything to go by.

Especially when we have Robert 'craziest morally neutral bisexual to ever live' Sugden getting released from jail without anyone being the wiser just to show up at the doorstep of his doubly divorced ex-husband Aaron 'owner of the biggest brownest sad eyes and only attracted to murderers' Dingle when he is about to marry Robert's long-lost and unwanted half brother...

Dropping a link to my Robron Emmerdale Playlist 2025. None of the videos are mine, they are mostly courtesy of Zebra5702 who is famously punctual and reliable for uploading queer British soap story lines. However I desperately need to watch and rewatch the videos in chronological order rather than upload order.

Click for a larger, sharper image

Today started out rather damp, but things eventually improved and the evening was warm and sunny, which weather is supposed to continue into tomorrow. We'll see! As it's June, the sun didn't set until well after 9 pm, and given my latitude (about 52 °N) the sky never really gets fully dark overnight. It's no midnight sun, but you can see slightly more light if you look north in the early hours, which is always a mildly strange feeling! I did a bit of top-up food shopping today, having to go to three different shops to find chives which was very slightly annoying. It's not as if they're a herb that's highly obscure!

My photo for today has nothing to do with that, other than being in Bewdley. This is part of a re-creation of the old brass foundry, which operated here on and off from the late 1600s until the 1960s. The building is now part of the town's small but interesting (and free!) museum. In fact brass-making was revived here for a little while in the earlier years of the museum's operation, but eventually modern safety standards caught up with it to the extent that it couldn't be sufficiently modernised at a sensible cost or without losing its historic character. Since then the foundry has made use of exhibits like this, multimedia presentations, etc.

I do actually remember seeing brass being made here before the museum foundry had to shut up shop in 1996. As a child I was brought here by my parents (I grew up only a few miles away) and it was quite an exciting sight. Cramped, noisy and -- what I'm sure sealed its fate -- very, very dusty! We visitors had to enter by a different door to the workers, and we were kept several metres away behind a perspex screen. Given that molten brass has a melting point of about 950 °C, it was sensible to keep us away from the furnaces! Sadly I can't find a video of Bewdley brass-making in those days, which is a pity.

1. Last night there was a massive leak in the boys' bedroom and I had every bucket, trash bin, baking sheet, and towel out. We called the emergency maintenance twice and got an AI voice telling us that it sounded like something that could be dealt with during business hour. Fuck you, you miserable pieces of shit.

So the drip-drip-drip all night drove me insane.

We even banged on the door upstairs but she wouldn't open the door!

I put the boys in my bed and I slept on the floor for about 2 hours. Then around 430, I got up, meditated, made the boys' lunches and packed a bag and went to the car. And slept for about an hour.

The ceiling crashed in about 7 am as the boys were getting ready for school. It's a mess. It's a complete and utter shite fest.

Then I fled and let the boys' father handle the maintenance and building management.

tw: cutting )

We had put in maintenance requests about the leak but of course they ignored them.

I am getting sleepy so I may go back to the car and take a nap. I suppose I could take a nap in the library but...I feel like getting in the car and going to a hotel and starting fresh with a new name and a new identity.

2. The job hasn't called me back, but I think I submitted all the paperwork.

This is my new favorite YT Garron Noone, the Irishman.

First y'all: I am disturbed that the original post I grabbed this from called this the "Favorite Characters Colors Addition". It is like nails on a chalkboard, the way I cringed. The correct word in this case is "Edition", and I half-assed a correction using Paint.

I gave a thought of branching out to other Final Fantasy games but no, I could fill the grid only with folks from Final Fantasy XIV, so I did so.

A c-novel recommendation: I Am Average and Unremarkable, a xianxia by Yue Xia Die Ying (“butterfly shadow beneath the moon”). I’ve enjoyed four other novels by the author, including serious historical romances and the lighthearted xianxia Ascending, Do Not Disturb. If you like the latter, you will likely enjoy this, as it has much the same sense of humor—and more of it.

Our Heroine, Jiu Hui, is a young yao, a word that can mean anything from spirit to monster to demon, but in this world, spirit comes closest—in this case, she’s a plant spirit, specifically a garlic chive spirit. (Yes, that’s a lol.) Other yao in this world are animals and sometimes plants that have absorbed enough power to attain sentience and, for the more advanced, the ability to take human form. Most humans, however, believe yao are inimical monsters as dangerous as demons (also present in this world), so she always presents as human.

The story starts with Our Heroine seeking to join a human cultivation sect because she’s reached the limit of what her remote yao village can teach her about human-style cultivation. Because the larger righteous sects are very into being righteous scourges of both yao and demons, she joins a small, relaxed sect. (Very small: five masters and ten disciples.) This turns out to be an excellent fit, as her apparently weak sect emphasizes evasion and deception techniques, and its interactions with other sects are best characterized on a sliding scale from mooching to grifting—and she, too, is very much a trickster figure. The story doesn’t use the term, but I think of them as specializing in the Dao of Shamelessness, though like many literary Tricksters, they stand with what’s right when it counts. Meanwhile, her Junior Sect Brother, recruited at the same time, turns out to be, ah, let’s call him socially awkward—as in, not well socialized—and he is hardly the only character with a background that is not simple.

It’s a fun book, rolled out with solid pacing. (The author notes are hilarious.) It also has a carefully laid plot that’s the spine of a surprisingly serious thematic core for a xianxia—it examines, from multiple directions, the question of when a sacrifice for the greater good, both willing and not, is morally acceptable. That there’s a literal Omelas situation is only one thread of this. Deep spoilers for the ending in rot13: Gur puvyq va gur onfrzrag vf na vzcbegnag punenpgre, naq gur abiry pyvznk vf onfvpnyyl Bhe Urebvar tbvat ‘jub gur shpx frg hc guvf ohyyfuvg gebyyrl ceboyrz’ naq qrslvat gur urnirayl qnb sbe orvat hawhfg.

I highly recommend this to anyone who’s already read a couple xianxia—it’s probably not a good starter story for the genre, as it leans heavily on convention to avoid explanations, even more so than Ascending, Do Not Disturb. It doesn’t help that the fan translation is a little wobbly (the translator particularly has trouble with verb forms). But if you have the background and can tolerate imperfect prose, this is a great read.

multifandom questionnaire pt 2

This is the second part of the questions from the 72 Multifandom questions to ask a fangirl.

Fandom Participation:

1. Do you keep up with any official or fan-authored wikis or encyclopedias about your fandom?
I don't think so. I've definitely used them as resources when I want to write fic and I don't remember specific details or if I want to find out more about, say, DC fandom/characters when I was writing Smallville fic.

#2-12
2. How do you stay updated with the latest news and information concerning your fandom?
I follow people who share my fandom on Tumblr and figure out things from others who post what is going on. Also sometimes, I follow the cast on IG and see if they post anything. Before, I used to be more active in reading fansites and the like, and take more of an initiative in posting news I find as well, but now I tend to take more of a relaxed stance. If I get really curious, I will look into things myself.

3. Are there any forums, social media groups, or online communities you frequent to discuss your fandom?
Back with Smallville, it was Livejournal. There were a lot of ship and fandom specific communities but mainly my journal and the journal of friends. Also, I used to go to some sites, like Divine Intervention, which was a Clois fansite. I was mostly a lurker at Kryptonsite.

These days, it's mainly Tumblr. I'm active on here, but I don't know how much I actively discuss fandoms. Not a fraction as much as I used to do on LJ for sure. I'm on Discord as well, but I tend to prefer one on one conversations. With servers, I tend to lurk more than actively participate.

4. How would you describe the overall atmosphere and culture within the fan community?
Good, as long as you know how to curate your experience. There are ups and downs to every type of fandom. There's drama and fighting, no matter how big or small the fandom is - it's just the type of fighting feels differently and I imagine it's more frustrating when you start out with fewer people and you have to block or worry about cliques since there is a chance of more overlap. It just depends what you want out of fandom and fortunately, there a lot of tools to help make it more pleasant and fun (blocking/muting/etc), which it should be.

5. Have you attended any fan conventions or meet-ups? If so, what was your experience like?
No, I used to want to, but I didn't want to go alone and since I've always tried to keep my online and real life separate, I didn't have anyone to go with.

6. What’s the significance of fan art, fan fiction, or fan videos in your community?
Really significant. I came to be part of fandom because of fanfiction - I had been reading it for years and then I eventually started writing. I started out writing for a very small ship in a big fandom and over the years, I've shipped bigger ships in bigger fandoms (MCU namely and I was able to see Sam/Bucky really grow into something bigger, which was nice). Now my main fandom is pretty big/active and there is a lot of content of all the above. I love looking at fanart and fan videos, though I do feel like I used to watch the latter more in the past. It seems a bit harder to find these days, unless you specifically search it out but the one way the algorithm on YouTube was useful is that if I find one I like, it starts to give me more so I have found some great creators that I wouldn't have otherwise, since I wasn't sure where to look.

7. Are there any charity or social causes your fandom community supports?
Currently, I've seen people participate in the Fandom Trumps Hate, which is obviously multifandom, and also, I think there's a 911forGaza one too.

8. How do fan theories or headcanons contribute to your enjoyment of the fandom?
As with fandom as a whole, there's good and bad. I like reading about other people's theories and headcanons and I enjoy coming up with my own. It's a fun surprise when you can theorize and speculate and end up being right - it has happened a couple of times over the years. However it is frustrating when a certain headcanon or theory can spread and take over and gets treated like canon. Sometimes, it's just mildly annoying because it's hard to avoid and others, when the fans get entitled and throw tantrums when they're not getting what they feel like they "deserve" or something happens that goes against their theory, it's downright frustrating.

9. Are there any rituals or annual events that your fandom community participates in each year?
There were plenty of ship specific events - I remember there being exchanges and the like for Clark/Lois in Smallville (and other ships but I can't tell you about those), both on a now deleted community and the fansite. Also there were Smallville fanfic awards with ship and general categories but that was in the later years. With my current fandom, I've seen annual events on Tumblr. Character/ship/theme specific weeks and a summer ship event that people are into. I haven't actually made anything for them yet but I'm still fairly new to 9-1-1 and am not yet comfortable with doing more than lurking.

10. What is the craziest or most dedicated thing you’ve done for your fandom(s)?
I don't think I've done anything too crazy. Online, I've ran communities and an exchange. Ran to the store to get a copy of the TV Guide that had Tom Welling & Erica Durance on it. Did the whole midnight bookstore visit to get my copy of the 7th HP book. Just fun stuff like that. Nothing too wild, or at least nothing I can think of.

11. Have you created any content or resources that have contributed to the fan community?
I've written fic and in the past few years, made some icons. Earlier on, back in Smallville fandom, since the ship I was writing for was so small and didn't have many other people writing for it, I did make a list of Clark/Oliver ships that I could link people when they expressed interest in the ship and didn't know where to find fic. I hope it helped.

12. Are there any well-known fan community leaders or content creators that you admire?
There are lot of great writers and vidders whose worsk I enjoy and subscribe to but I can't say I'm aware these days of who is "big" in fandom. Obviously you can tell by AO3 stats and who does numbers on Tumblr but I don't pay attention to that.

Not a great deal to report today, as I didn't really do anything terribly interesting. I did enjoy some rum and raisin ice cream, which is one of my favourite flavours, though in truth the weather was only just warm enough for it. It's supposed to be a good deal warmer from Wednesday onwards, with temperatures into the mid-20s, but also a substantial risk of thunderstorms. I popped into Sainsbury's to get a snack, but I dithered so much that I didn't end up buying anything. Today's photo was taken on the eastern edge of Bewdley, along Kidderminster Road. There's a building site just over the wall you can see here, so the poppies create a nice splash of colour to compensate a bit.

Have any of you seen Pierre Bonnard's works?

The recent art book from my library I finished was about Pierre Bonnard. It was a rather big one and so it took me a bit longer to finish than the others. He was born in 1867 and passed away in 1947, living to be 79. He was a founding member of the post impressionist group.

What I noticed and what the book talked about a good deal was his detailed backgrounds. With colors and textures they stood out in an unusual way. Pierre was inspired by Japanese art and having now seen some of his paintings in the similar style I feel it worked well for him. Some of his paintings felt pretty expressive with his somewhat flowing style of clothing, hairstyles, poses and facial expressions. Pierre seemed to have liked painting with his friends and family during dining or lounging or
I liked what the book shared with me but looking online at his other works has been a good experience as well.

For Poetry Monday:

One word is too often profaned,” Percy Shelley

One word is too often profaned
    For me to profane it,
One feeling too falsely disdained
    For thee to disdain it;
One hope is too like despair
    For prudence to smother,
And pity from thee more dear
    Than that from another.

I can give not what men call love,
    But wilt thou accept not
The worship the heart lifts above
    And the Heavens reject not,—
The desire of the moth for the star,
Of the night for the morrow,
The devotion to something afar
From the sphere of our sorrow?

Another poem Shelley wrote in 1822 that was posthumously published with the editorial title “To ——.” In this case, —— was Jane Williams, with whom he did not in fact have an affair—he wrote several poems to her, all professing deep friendship, but he seems to have truly kept things at that level (with his history, that’s not a given). Jane Williams and her husband, Edward, were close friends with both Shelleys, and Edward died in the same boating accident that killed Percy. The word is, of course, at the end of line 9.

(That rhyme of accept and reject gets a side-eye.)

Abomination Vaults

I'm happy and a little sad--our adventure into the Abomination Vaults is over!

It's hard to believe that my hubs, some friends, and I started playing the Pathfinder adventure in October 2022! Being a very casual gaming group, we met every couple of weeks, as it was hard to find dates that worked for everyone.

Instead of pen and paper, we used Foundry software, which presented a learning curve, along with learning Pathfinder. It has many similarities to Dungeons & Dragons, but often uses different names. For example, haste is called quickening, and the Dungeon Master is called Game Master.

Abomination Vaults is a multi-level dungeon crawl with monsters, treasures, and several mysteries to solve. Our party consisted of:

  • Azurial, half-elf sorcerer and merchant; tallest of the group😄

  • Bloodblade, a brave catfolk fighter

  • Gnak, a goblin rogue who brought a lot of flavour to the campaign

  • Mauve, Halfling ranger and scholar

  • Skigim, young ratfolk monk fighter

Like all RPGs, it was wonderful to see how our party progressed from running away from mitflits to battling large groups of monsters and taking down the Big Bad with ease at the end.

Our party was a little unbalanced for the adventure, especially since we didn't have a cleric. Mauve became the default healer for the first few levels and often implored party members to have a sense of self-preservation. She excelled at ranged attacks for this reason and finally got around to trying melee after level five. Mauve started out with a pony, Swifty, but he ended up staying in town for the duration of the adventure. The GM and I weren't quite sure how to integrate the pony into the action. A dungeon is no place for a pony anyway!

Hubs struggled with playing a magic user. He often played Azurial as a barbarian, rushing into rooms and into danger :-D

The next adventure is set in more open worlds with travel between towns, but I bowed out. Hubs is returning though with a dromaar fighter. I think he'll enjoy it much more.

Today's U-turn on Winter Fuel Allowance payments is arguably fairly reasonable in its intent, in that it means truly wealthy pensioners will not receive WFA but those on average incomes will. Put like that, it sounds fine, and in principle I can get behind it. The snag is... well, the several snags are:

1) The government has insisted, loudly, since last year that on no account would they do this, and that anyone suggesting they'd U-turn was not telling the truth. The "anyones" were telling the truth; the government wasn't.
2) Rachel Reeves has acquired a reputation as an extremely poor Chancellor who neither sticks by her commitments nor acknowledges U-turns. This will make that reputation even worse.
3) The new limit will be £35,000 a year, per person. But a couple on a combined income of £69,000 with no mortgage is much wealthier than the large majority of working people, especially those with children to support.
4) We're told that whether someone reaches the £35,000 mark will be decided via income tax returns. But most pensioners who have no other income don't do tax returns in the first place.
5) The change will cost £1.2 billion. Where's that coming from? Almost nobody believes Reeves' comment that the economy is suddenly doing sufficiently better to afford this.
6) There's already a strong sense that wealthier pensioners are uniquely shielded from cuts while everyone else suffers -- the triple lock is another example. This looks like strengthening that feeling.
7) If previously announced public spending, eg the extra money for public transport outside London, is cut again to pay for this then there will be absolute carnage in Labour's support in the regions.
8) The UK's demographics mean that the pensioner:worker ratio is becoming ever more tilted towards pensioners. If current trends continue, this change will become less affordable, not more.
9) One way of ameliorating this is by allowing more immigration -- but this is becoming politically toxic. England (specifically) is the most densely populated non-tiny country in Europe.
10) Nigel Farage, who pushed for this change, now has a clear win. Everyone knows that Reform's economics are far more fantastical than Labour's, but it doesn't seem to affect its polling.

Other than that, it's absolutely fine...

Hello, fellow Idol adventurers—

I’m simplyn2deep, but you can call me Liz, and this is my second leap into the wonderfully unpredictable maelstrom that is [community profile] therealljidol…but this time with more chaos! I’m here because I believe some of the best stories are born when you’re off balance, running sideways, and maybe a little bit scared—but still writing anyway.

A few things about me:

* I write like I breathe: often, messily, and occasionally with flair.
* I’m a fan of tangled emotions, mythological metaphors, found families, and characters who love hard and fall harder.
* I have a thing for drabbles and 50k epics, poetry and prose, structured chaos and chaotic structure—basically, if it’s written, I’ll probably try it at least once.
* In real life, I juggle school (starting my last 2 semesters in August), work (after-school substitute program leader for elementary students) and sleeping, but this? This is my creative breath of fresh air.

Looking forward to seeing what wild prompts we all get flung into and cheering each of you on as we try to make sense of the beautiful mess.

If you’d like to join the chaos, you can do so here!

Let the wheel turn. I’m ready.

I was treated to breakfast by someone today at the Colliers. This is a pub-restaurant a few miles west of Bewdley, near the small village of Clows (rhymes with "cows") Top. Their breakfast baps are truly excellent -- I went for sausage, bacon and tomato today. Then it was off to the next-door shop you see here. It sells some ordinary things, which are frankly expensive, but of more interest to me are the local pies and pasties, Bennetts ice cream (my favourite farmhouse brand) and cider. All of these were acquired today, so I think it counts as a successful mission! The shop also sells a few locally made ornaments and such -- you can just see some of the wooden animals (reindeer and rabbits) inside the outer door.

Honouring a Beautiful Man

Hello, Dear Readers. It has been an extremely long time since I have written, and I intend to write several filler entries for last month (using their appropriate dates) and some new ones. But I simply could not let today pass without continuing my tradition of honouring this wonderful man.

Aside from being a crazy day weather wise here in New Jersey, it is also a wonderful day to celebrate. Today marks the 247th birthday of George Bryan (Beau) Brummell. This man has had a profound effect, not only on my life by changing it into something truly wonderful, but on the world and the entire history of fashion. He rose as high as a commoner could possibly go in society, even befriending royalty, then fell as low as anyone could possibly go, ending his life penniless in an asylum. Along the way, he touched the lives of an untold number of people in his own lifetime and billions who came after him. Sophistication, eloquence, wit, dry humour, talent in several fields, curiosity, and a drive to succeed were all his. He carved a name for himself, not due to the achievements of anyone else, but to his own unique characteristics that made him the consummate dandy, and for me personally, the ideal man upon whom I base my own desires for a partner. Even now, in 2025, his influence can be felt and seen everywhere and is appreciated by anyone who values cleanliness, proper dress, excellent speech, a biting tongue, and the confidence to enjoy life to the fullest, no matter what anyone else may think, do, or say.

Below is a post from Dreamwidth related to dandies. In it, is an entire section devoted to The Beau.
