The word was introduced by the author and cognitive scientist Douglas R. Hofstadter (born 1945) in chapter 13 of the book Metamagical Themas: Questing for the Essence of Mind and Pattern (New York, 1985).

I find it fascinating that this word was coined in 1985; I would have assumed that a word for it already existed, maybe from when manuscripts where being written by hand with fancy lettering.

I love these -- I had Scott Kim's book Inversions from 1981, and apparently Hofstadter coined the word to describe what Kim was already doing. (Dang, that thing's going for $200+? I shouldn't have lost it during a move.)

I like watching what people come up with in r/ambigrams
