Good evening all! I hope everyone's enjoying 1word1day's revitalisation - I really hope we can keep it going for as long as possible, because I'd hate to see it stagnate like it did last year.

In other news, I have an exciting new resource for words that will last me quite a while. Choosing a word will involve a number of dice rolls for truely random results!

Usage
James hefted a sigh. He had been seeing people all day who wanted the spare room in his house, but none seemed to fit the bill. Of the few that seemed alright, not one of them seemed suitably homodoxian for his tastes. Perhaps he'd be best living alone.

*Unfortunately, we find that many words from the OED are obsolete and no longer in use, many for over 100 years. Though fascinating words, many don't have etymologies or pronounciations. Where possible, I'm using my knowledge of language to guess at the pronounciation. I'm using them because they have an official source (The OED, Second Edition, 1989) and are awesome words. Have the OED, or can fill in the blanks? Let me know!

I do have access to the OED, but even if I didn't, this one's pretty much a straight Greek transliteration - homo-, same; doxa, opinion (and also glory, oddly) (c.f. heterodox, of a different opinion, and the more common orthodox, 'correct' opinion).

You have the OED? Awesome! Most of the words I plan to be using have no listed etymology. It would be easier to just leave it out, but I prefer to have it. Do you know if there's an online edition of the OED that's cheap or free?

I don't think there is, sorry. I only have access to it via the Athens system my university has a subscription with. If a college you went to is a bit sloppy with clearing up their accounts, you might be able to get access through that, and some other institutions have subscriptions but don't widely publicise it - check this list: List of Athens sites that have OED access (http://auth.athensams.net/list_orgs.php).

Otherwise, I guess you're stuck with the usual free online sources like Merriam-Webster and such.

Just btw I think 'doxa' meaning 'glory' is by extension from 'reputation', ie the opinion others have of you.

"Wait, what? You are too? DOES YOUR BOYFRIEND KNOW, MISSY?!?"




(In this case I'm making the assumption that most people upon first hearing this word would think it has something to do with homosexuality. In case anyone was confused why my boyfriend would care that I know people who hold the same views as I do.)
