Two words because I missed it last week.  Sorry, guys!  I have no excuse.  The day just got away from me and the next thing I knew it was Wednesday.

Kleptocracy:  (noun) A pejorative term for a government that takes advantage of government corruption to extend the wealth and power of the ruling class, kleptocrats, usually through the embezzlement of public funds.  A government run expressly for the financial benefit of those who govern.
Alternatively, a narcokleptocracy is a society run by thieves involved in the narcotics trade.

Comes from: Alternatively cleptocracy or kleptarchy, from Greek kleptes (thieves) and kratos (rule)

Example:  NGO Transparency International, a non-corruption group, put together a top ten list of the most self-enriching leaders in the world.  Former Indonesian president Suharto won the prize for running the most profitable kleptocracy and his prize is an estimated 15-35 billion USD.

Calumny: [kal-uhm-nee] (noun) A false and malicious statement designed to injure the reputation of someone or something, slander.

Comes from: Mid-15c., from M.Fr. calomnie (15c.), from L. calumnia "trickery, subterfuge, misrepresentation, malicious charge," from calvi "to trick, deceive," from PIE base *kel-, *kol- "to deceive, confuse" (cf. Gk. kelein "to bewitch, seduce, beguile," Goth. holon "to deceive," O.N. hol "praise, flattery," O.E. hol "slander," holian "to slander").

Example:  However opposed of his policies I may be, I feel a pang of pity for the long list of calumnies sure to follow my former president's reputation into history.  Then again, he can rejoice in having evaded NGO Transparency International's list.  I wonder where allegedly stealing an election fits into kleptocracies?
