God save you, neighbours!

It's Wednesday again, which means another installment of Shakespearean Imagination!

It’s the holiday season, which means a wide variety of social obligations, regardless of your faith or belief systems. More than any other time of the year, it seems, now is the time that our social calendars fill up and our appearance is required expected requested at various events throughout the season. And so, I give you today’s word:

hobnob : hob•nob / ˈhäbˌnäb/ (verb) :

verb
-mix socially, especially with those of higher social status.

Synonyms consort – fraternise – keep company – mingle – mix – rub elbows – socialize

First seen in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (written 1599 - 1600). The full text of the play may be found here.

OED says that is true of the "o" spelling, but there are earlier references for the traditional "a" spelling. Still rather a great piece of etymology, thank you.
