lanugo  (l-ng), noun.
A cottony or downy growth, such as the fine soft hair that covers the fetuses of some mammals.

In humans, the lanugo is usually shed about a month before birth.

Etymology:  1500s, from Latin lana, wool.

'Lanuginous' is a synonym for 'downy'.
