plangent (PLAN-juhnt) - adj., resounding, esp. with a plaintive sound.

As a large bell -- resonant and mournful together. A song of long-lost love can also be plangent, or a distant echo, or a slow surf in the evening. Coined in 1822 from the present participle of Latin plangere, to beat, especially to beat the breast in lamentation, which gave a second meaning of simply to lament.

Plangent organ music filled the church.

It's been so long since I've heard that word that I'd forgotten about it; thanks.
(a song of long-lost words...)
