Howdy folks!

Thanks to all viewers and volunteers for your patience while we worked everything out. All posters have been added for the last day or so, just awaiting on [livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey's response to be a member so I can add her as a poster.

The rest of you, mind, are welcome to start.. well.. from yesterday! Just wanted to formally let you know that we're back underway, just in case any of you were unsure!

Over the course of the next few weeks I might be tossing out some new ideas, asking for feedback, etc. I've noticed, though, that we have 2831 posters, but hardly any of you comment! So, make yourself known, let me know what you'd like to see or provide some feedback! After all, I'll be running this community for you guys!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Hi folks!

Sorry for the delay - I've been a little unwell over the last few days, and as [livejournal.com profile] brbplayingchess will attest, we've had a bit of a heat wave the last few days.

I've gone through the comments and worked out everyone's preferred days - what I have are as follows. If anyone has an issue, please let me know ASAP. If any of you want to fight it out for a preferred day, at least make it interesting!

Sunday [livejournal.com profile] nerdfury
Monday [livejournal.com profile] brbplayingchess
Tuesday [livejournal.com profile] rainbow_yarn
Wednesday [livejournal.com profile] miss_daizy
Thursday [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword
Friday [livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey
Saturday [livejournal.com profile] fidgetspin

If anyone else wants to volunteer for an odd word here or there, or for a theme (like science, grammar, word history, etc) let me know. I'd love to have theme days! Feedback and suggestions welcome!

Over the next few days I'll draft up some posting guidelines for what we hope to achieve, update the info page and make a few more changes. I'd also like to change the layout and themes, so if anyone can make a sweet looking wordy theme, let me know!

As always, guys, my door is always open. I want to make sure I'm always around to help. If you have any queries, questions, concerns, feedback, hate mail, sexy suggestions or whatever else, please always feel free to contact me via LJ or via my Twitter feed.

Thanks guys!

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey and [livejournal.com profile] fidgetspin, you guys aren't listed as members, so I can't add you as posters yet. Can you please join the community and let me know when you have so I can add you as posters? Thanks!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Thanks to everyone who kindly added their two bob in my last post. No, there hasn't been any posting since I removed the current posters - for anyone wailing and gnashing their teeth at the lack of wordiness, I apologise! It will all start up again once the new posters are sorted.

We have some volunteers for the new regime of posters, and I was gonna email you all individually to work out who wanted to post when, but it seems easier to just post here. Anyone who doesn't comment by, say, Friday, will get a little reminder nudge to take a peek.

Anyway! Thus far I have the following posters on the following days:

[livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey and [livejournal.com profile] brbplayingchess wanting Mondays, and[livejournal.com profile] miss_daizy and [livejournal.com profile] rainbow_yarn wanting Tuesdays. You two will need to work out who gets Tuesdays.

[livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey is also up for Fridays, potentially giving [livejournal.com profile] brbplayingchess.Mondays.

This leaves [livejournal.com profile] fidgetspin, [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword  and myself to fill in the last three days! Once we've got all that sorted out, I'll add to the roster, edit the profile page and we can get this nerdywordyparty started!

Discuss away!

EDIT: Sorry about the confusion, guys - LJ ate up most of what I'd written. None of you were left out at all! Edited correctly now.

Howdy folks,

As many of you are aware, the 'word a day' vibe of this community has dropped down to something more akin to 'word a week or possibly two if someone remembers.' This isn't what we want as a community! We want a daily list of fresh words to inspire and learn, not a weekly word from me, and an ever degrading list of occasional posters.

As you'll also have noticed, our illustrious owner and maintainers have all but disappeared, so it's time for some decisive action!

Effective immediately I've taken maintainership of the community and removed everyone else so we can start fresh with new, daily posters. Don't panic, existing mods, maintainers and posters - you aren't banned! More on this below.

Now, this is a pretty adult community - we have relatively little issue with trolls or such. A few arrogant pratts here and there, but usually they're harmless. - but I always have to expect some concern, so here's a few pre-emptive answers to what may be asked:

Q. Is this a hostile takeover? Will there be military personnel in the streets? Will I have to learn to speak Australian to avoid raising suspicion?

A. Not by any means! There has been a lack of maintainership and postership for several months now, and I am simply taking decisive action to get the place back on track, as the prior maintainer
[info]sea_gaagii once did ages ago. With all the mods gone, and most of the posters scattered to the four winds, I'm hoping to get us back to daily posts by taking ownership of the situation.

Q. What about my existing maintainer/moderator/poster status? Am I no longer welcome? Don't you love me?

A. A lot of people no longer have a presence in the community under their roles. Those who had the roles have been removed so we can have a fresh start. If any of the people who had certain roles here comment, send me a PM or email me at shirosenshi at gmail dot com, they'll be immediately re-added if they're up for continuing to post or moderate the community! You've just been removed for now because it's easier to remove all and add those who want to continue in their roles than to keep everyone and work out who's just away on holiday or just doesn't check their email often enough.

So, my friends, there are two questions to be asked:

1. Who wants to post? I need six people, and some subs, who are willing and able to post one word per week.

2. What do you, as the readers of this community, want from this place? I've tried to expand the community's horizons a little by posting phrases (anyone remember Fin de Siecle?) and things that technically aren't real (like 'Tetris Effect' and 'Greebles'!). But does anyone else have any ideas for how we might expand the community and make it a little more exciting, and maybe easier for people to post things if they can't find a word?

All comments welcome, I look forward to your questions, queries and feedback. Please, as always, keep it polite and constructive. If you have a serious issue, please contact me privately. This is, once again, not a hostile takeover. I'm just getting things back up and running again.

Thanks all!

I deleted an entry that was taken from the dictionary.com word of the day post.
I understand the desire to make a quick post, heck, I even missed this past week.
It is not that useful to use the same word from the dictionary.com feed, but I am not making that a rule.
However we cannot be cutting and pasting postings and examples. No one is in any trouble, at least none of you folk, my dog got into the garbage downstairs and will get a 'talking to'.

Again I understand people can get busy, especially yesterday being Valentines day. You need to plan a romantic evening, double check dinner reservations, shower, dress nicely, and some how find a long term relationship by dinner!

On a different note. I hope all our Southern Aussie folk are ok!
[identity profile] sea-gaagii.livejournal.com
I "spoke" with [livejournal.com profile] flaming_tyger and we agreed that there should be some time limit for turning substitute posters in to permanent posters.

[livejournal.com profile] flaming_tyger also decided to make me co-moderator of the community. I promise not to let this new-found power go to my head.

So here are some rules - set forth by my IRON FIST OF POWER-HUNGRY DOOOOOOM!!!
1. If a poster misses 3 weeks in a row a substitute will be chosen from the list of subs.
2. If a poster doesn't return for 5 more weeks (or at least contact us to let us know what is up) the substitute poster will become the permanent poster for that day.
3. If you are going off to Timbuktu for an extended vacation, you can get a substitute and this will not count against you - just make a maintenance post with some information about how long you will be gone - and we'll set someone up. Also consider sending me a T-Shirt.
4. All members of this community will change their underwear every half hour.
5. All members of this community will wear their underwear on the outside so we can check.
6. It is not required that everyone gets movie references.

Really not much new and the rules are more guidelines - exceptions can be made even if you don't send me a T-Shirt.

Also it pleases me to note [livejournal.com profile] aukogi and [livejournal.com profile] karmic_serenity are now the permanent posters for Sunday and Monday respectively.

Edit: Also we have the word-man from down under, [livejournal.com profile] nerdfury, on Thursdays.
[identity profile] sea-gaagii.livejournal.com
I am sure some of you have noticed the dearth of posts as of late.

I hate to see days languishing without entry; but just being the Friday guy and not the actual owner of the community, I hesitate to make any evictions.

So I think I will instead institute a system of substitutes. Substitutes will remain in place until the people who have been assigned the days return or [livejournal.com profile] flaming_tyger decides to actually evict them.

I'll start with the two most neglected days:
Sunday and Monday where the last posts were 9 weeks ago for the former and 6 weeks ago for the latter.

I think I will make 3 missed weeks the cutoff for assigning a substitute.
So Thursday and Saturday might be available after this week.

Any volunteers for substitution which might perhaps become permanent positions?

NOTE: This is strictly to keep this community active and should not be construed as a criticism of any sort.
Above included at the urging of my lawyer

Thanks for all the feedback, I have begun the tag update (this will take a while).
Hopefully we will get all the posters on-board (and I hope [livejournal.com profile] flaming_tyger is happy with this).

Here is the tag list:
Part of speech - Noun, Verb, Adjective, ...
First letter of word - a, b, c ...
Literature - If the word itself (e.g. Faustian) or the example comes from to us from literature.
If the words has the origins listed, origin language - French, Greek, Latin ...
Other interesting tags: Alliteration, Poem, Limerick ...
Maintenance - for entries related to the community journal itself.

The reason for the first letter tag is to hopefully allow looking up to see if a word was previously used in a reasonable time.

I have been deleting unused tags, so the current huge set of tags should start to get smaller.
[identity profile] sea-gaagii.livejournal.com
I was thinking about 'tags'; most of the entries are tagged with the date, which is not really useful.

perhaps we could tag the entries with these items:
Part of speech
The Word itself
Other interesting words which might be in the example (such as references to previous words)
key words -
Literature - if the example is from literature
  Poem, Limerick, etc...

I am not sure of I have the ability to change the tags on other's entries, but if no-one objects I will start going back to do this.

In case I have not yet been evicted from my position as Tuesday's poster, I would like to abdicate, as I somehow never remember to post. I humbly apologize.

inordinate-adjective  [in-awr-dn-it]
1. not within proper or reasonable limits; immoderate; excessive: He drank an inordinate amount of wine.
2. unrestrained in conduct, feelings, etc.: an inordinate admirer of beauty.
3. disorderly; uncontrolled.
4. not regulated; irregular: inordinate hours.

I've decided that [profile] crayonfish, should she accept it, will do the word of the day on Fridays.

[identity profile] ohendless-night.livejournal.com
if someone else wants to post Words for Friday, they can take it.

I adore this community, but after over a year of watching it, I'm leaving.  Hopefully, [profile] __morpheus_ will be happy with whomever [profile] flaming_tyger chooses.      Thanks!
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
At this point, every day has a person to do a word! I've given everyone posting access who needs it, so Word of the Day begins again!
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
As of right now, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday do not have words, as the people they were assigned to never responded. So based on another random drawing/assigning

Tuesday- [profile] ishmaella
Thursday-[profile] shine_shine
Friday-[profile] ohendless_night

Please respond!
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
I've only heard from [profile] educate_sedate  and [profile] cucumber_eyes89 . With me, that's still only 3 out of 7 days of the week. If you the other four of you could respond by Tuesday, that'd be great. If not, I'll probably pick other people so that we can start getting words posted again.

And for everyone else:
trite-adjective [trahyt]
1. lacking in freshness or effectiveness because of constant use or excessive repetition; hackneyed; stale: the trite phrases in his letter.
2. characterized by hackneyed expressions, ideas, etc.: The commencement address was trite and endlessly long.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/trite

While his speech was trite and full of exaggeration, no one could deny that he deeply cared about what he was talking about.
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
Sorry for the delay in more postings, but starting soon, there should be one everyday.
Several people seemed to like the idea of having a different person post a word each day. I think that is probably the best idea, because I think it'll produce a lot of words and just be easier for all the posters. I think we'll try that for a while and see how it works.
As such, I picked 7 people who volunteered at random and assigned them days, at random. The schedule will be as following, unless someone wants it changed.
Sunday-[info]ruatine
Monday-  [profile] cucumber_eyes
Tuesday-  [profile] theratgoddess
Wednesday- [profile] flaming_tyger
Thursday- [profile] akaleia
Friday- [profile] yasashiiuke
Saturday- [profile] educate_sedate

So if each of those people could comment on this entry and say they'll do it, that would be great. As soon as everyone comments, we'll start posting words again.
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
To edit that last post:
I've already had a couple people comment that they want to take it over, so anyone who wants to should leave a comment and I'll pick randomly, rather than the person who did it first.
[identity profile] flaming-tyger.livejournal.com
Hey everyone.
I realized today that I haven't posted in about three weeks. I mean, sure, I was really busy for a while there, but lately, every time I think about posting a new word, I find something else to do. I really like having a word of the day, but I am tired of doing it. So if anyone would like to take this community over, I would gladly hand it over. It's been a nice year and half-ish, and I'm glad so many people like it, which is why I don't want it just to die.
So if you'd like to take it over, just leave a comment. It'll probably go to whoever the first one to comment is, if more than one of you wants to do it.

(and because it's a cool word)

To everyone:
I am so sorry that I haven't posted in ages, but things have been a bit crazy concerning my internet, and then I went away for a week and a half, before I could ask someone to take over. I feel really awful for not telling everyone that there wouldn't be a word of a day for a while, but it was out of my control. I'm back, though, so your words will come back.

solicitous-adjective  [suh-lis-i-tuhs]
1. anxious or concerned (usually fol. by about, for, etc., or a clause): solicitous about a person's health.
2. anxiously desirous: solicitous of the esteem of others.
3. eager (usually fol. by an infinitive): He was always solicitous to please.
4. careful or particular: a solicitous housekeeper.
