Hello everyone,

I am [livejournal.com profile] med_cat, your new comm maintainter. As you may've seen the other week in his post, [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword is stepping down.

Now, we appear to have lost the majority of our regular posters, so:

Question 1. I am asking if anybody would like to step in? Most days of the week are currently available.

Also, I have backed up the comm to Dreamwidth (https://1word1day.dreamwidth.org/), and so,

Question 2. I wanted to ask the comm members here what they would prefer:

a. Continue posting here and do regular backups to Dreamwidth (2-4 times a month; I would be happy to do the backups).

or

b. Migrate to Dreamwidth and just post weekly summaries here (which, again, I can do).

Please let me know in comments.

Question 3. Apparently, some years ago, there was a FB group for this comm. The link no longer appears active. Would anybody be interested in reviving the FB group, or having a FB page for the comm?

Thank you, please let me know in the comments and/or via PM!

Have a great week ahead, everyone!

sitzkrieg (SITZ-kreeg, ZITZ-kreeg) - n., slow-moving warfare marked by repeated stalemate.

Coined in the R.A.F. in 1940 from German Sitz, from sitzen, to sit + Krieg, war, modeled after and parodying blitzkrieg -- and thereby hangs a tale. As you may remember from the history of World War II, in the roughly six-month period after the declarations of war between Germany, France, Great Britain, et alia, not much happened on the Western Front. Germany mopped up Poland in a blitzkrieg, "lightning war", (re)took the Saar valley, and invaded Denmark and Norway, but avoided France and the Netherlands for the moment. It turned into a waiting game for the Western Allies, and the expected bolt never struck -- a "sitting war" waiting for something to happen. Eventually Hitler attacked, though, and the Allies found that the war was not phoney after all.

The longest match of the tournament was a veritable sitzkrieg, lasting 105 moves and three and a half hours only to end in a draw.

Administrivia: We're still looking for a regular Saturday poster. Interested applicants inquire within.

[identity profile] prettygoodword.livejournal.com
Since we don't yet have a regular Wednesday poster, I'll take this opportunity to ... ask for a volunteer for this day. Any takers?

Also, if you want to post but can't commit to every week, we're also looking for alternate posters -- who can pinch hit for those times when, well, life happens to the regularly scheduled poster.

---L.
[identity profile] prettygoodword.livejournal.com
As you may have noticed, words have been a bit thin on the ground here, with over half our current posters MIA. Which means, dear reader, this is your chance to become one of the regular curators here on [livejournal.com profile] 1word1day. If you're not up for posting every week, you can still volunteer to be an alternate, for those occasions when life (and holiday) happens. Here's our currents schedule of posters:

Sunday: (open) [livejournal.com profile] theidolhands
Monday: [livejournal.com profile] ersatz_read
Tuesday: (open?) [livejournal.com profile] skittles22088
Wednesday: (open?)
Thursday: [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword
Friday: (open?) [livejournal.com profile] med_cat
Saturday: [livejournal.com profile] k8cre8

If you are a regular for one of the (open?) days and are still interested, please let me know, but after not posting for a few months nor responding to LJ messages, I can only assume you've gafiated. Everyone else, feel free to call out what day you want. Anyone can join -- the only requirement is a willingness to post every week that day, life willing.

Once we get this settled, we can move on to theme weeks and guest posts. But given the comm name, the regular posting is the priority.

Hi folks,

A little while ago, I advised that due to Real Life getting in the way of being able to concentrate wholly on the community, I was looking  for someone to take over, at least temporarily, to keep the place running smoothly until I had the time to dedicate.

I've received a few emails and private messages from interested parties, and after running them all through a series of tests, duels, and cook-offs, I've decided that our own [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodwordwill be taking over for a while.

You've all seen his words here, and he's been a dedicated member of the community from long before I took over and picked up the pace, when the last mods disappeared for a while.

Now, this isn't permanent - I hope to get everything squared away, and I'll step back into place as a dual-maintainer and help keep the place going, so it's not goodbye! Hopefully you'll all treat [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword as kindly as you treated me, and I'm sure our beloved community will flourish!

The keys are hidden in an old fake rock in the garden, [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword, and the switches can be a bit tricky sometimes. Don't forget to water the roses.

See you all soon.

Hi guys,

It's become increasingly common for me to miss posts of late, and I haven't been able to pay much attention to the daily maintenance of the community. Truth is, I have a lot on my plate at the moment, and LiveJournal just isn't a part of my daily routine any more, and with everything else I'm concentrating on at the moment, I just don't have the time or will to try and force myself to include the community in my routines.

For a while, I had no issues with it, but now it's become clear that I have to force myself, which means it will become a chore. It's not that I don't enjoy the prospect, it's just that I've realised I just can't incorporate maintenance, posting, and chasing after people into my daily hither and thither - the idea of forcing myself to do it, and therefore turning it into a chore, doesn't sound appealing. My work is already a chore which I hate, and I have to do that for nine hours a day, five days a week. I really don't want to turn this into something I 'have' to do, rather than love to do.

That said, I'm looking at stepping down as a poster and maintainer of the community, and would like someone to take over. Naturally, it can't be just anyone - I'd prefer someone who can do the place justice, and do for it now what I did for it a while back: really invigorate the place and make it a fun place again.

Anyone who is interested in taking over should email me at shirosenshi at gmail dot com with their expression of interest. I'd like to know what plans you have for the community, how much time you can spare, and what your next steps will be following taking over.

I'd like to thank everyone for their support while I ran the place, and apologise for my lack of posting of late. As I said, it's better to step out gracefully than just disappear and leave you all wondering what's happening.

Thanks all.
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Slightly late, my apologies. As you should all expect, here's some words without English equivalents!

Toska
Russian
Vladmir Nabokov describes it best: “No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.”

Jayus
Indonesian
A joke so poorly told and so unfunny that one cannot help but laugh

Litost
Czech
The closest definition is a state of agony and torment created by the sudden sight of one’s own misery.
Kyoikumama
Japanese
A mother who relentlessly pushes her children toward academic achievement.

So in sad news, our own [livejournal.com profile] imifumei has sent me a message to advise that she has taken a job overseas, and will no longer be able to post. Sad to see you go, but it was great having you! You'll always be welcome back if you want. :D

Now, you might have noticed a bit of a lack of posting of late. I can hardly speak, since I've had some issues catching up, but there seems to be only three regular posters now. I admity I've been remiss myself, and might not have seen if anyone's posted about needing to take a break or quit, so I'm not sure where all the posters stand. Do we have any new volunteers to help pick up the slack?

Let me know!

So hey.

Hello, folks! It's been a crazy long while since I've posted, and all due to a Series of Unfortunate Events that made posting a bitch. Don't worry, Jim Carrey wasn't involved. First, there was that whooping cough. Then, LJ borked my account, then they borked my maintainer access and I couldn't post, and then LJ wasn't able to be accessed for ages from my computer. Still don't know why, and they maintain it was likely my fault. I tried to post from work, but LJ was flagged as a 'dangerous' site. I guess it IS owned by the Russians now.

But! Good news is I AM alive, and I should resume posting again from this Sunday. Ironically, just as I get all this sorted out, I get a cold - but only a little one.

So, what's up, Word Nerds? Anything I need to know about? I haven't been able to keep up with the comm for a while because of all these issues, so I'm probably way behind.

Good to be back!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Hi guys,

Just wanted to make a quick post to let you all know that I am still alive. Unfortunately, I've had a rather nasty throat infection, followed by whooping cough (AGAIN!) for the last while, which hasn't been conducive to posting. Add to that some LJ problems and my weekly reminder dying, and I've been a bit lax.

I did type something up ON Sunday, but I realised I forgot to hit post and when I rebooted my PC, I lost both what I've written and the copy on the clipboard.

At the moment, I'm trying to avoid coughing so hard my entrails become my extrails, but just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know I'm still here! At least, in spirit.

Did someone want to take over from my Sunday posts for a couple of weeks?

D:

EDIT: Shit, I just looked down my F-list and saw that my post DID appear. WTF, LiveJournal?
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com

To my dearest Word Nerds,

I have owned, moderated and ran a number of communities over the years, and none of them have been nearly as special as this one. While we're not the most active - in terms of commenting - it is definitely the most polite and tolerant I have ever experienced.

Years ago, I made the mistake of offering a Happy Christmas to a community I ran, and got practically run out of town under accusations of bigotry and racism by a collection of non-Christians. As an Atheist myself, I vowed to never try and do it again.

You guys are all amazing, so for the first time in a long time, I'd like to offer a 'Festive' message.

No matter who you are, where you are from; no matter your race or nationality; no matter your culture, religion or creed - Whether you're celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Bodhi Day, Ashura, Posadas Navidenas, Yule, Litha, the Death of the Prophet Zarathushtra, Watch Night, Holy Innocents, Solstice, Festivus, Giftmas, Noworkmas or Bah-Humbugmas, I would like to wish each and every one of you and your families happy holidays.

Last year I posted a poem for you all, written by myself. This year, it's joined by a brilliant illustration by our very own [livejournal.com profile] brbplayingchess*.

No matter what holiday - religious or otherwise - you're celebrating, we can all band together as one under the fear of the Oncoming Madness.

With wordy love for you all,

Your Maintainer,

- Nerdfury.

Apologies for missing last Monday - I actually had a post written up with a neat phrase I found, but when I got home to post it I found out that my PC had rebooted and I lost it. And then I forgot.

But, in lieu of my poor short-term memory issues, I am pleased to announce that my call for themed posters has yielded one expression of interest!

Introducing [livejournal.com profile] k8cre8! - Kate has expressed an enjoyment for posting stories for her words, and has agreed to post a little written entertainment each Saturday for your enjoyment!

Please make her feel welcome!

Don't forget, too, that I'm still looking for interest in themed posters! I had some interest in comments, but have not as yet received any emails to 1word1day@nerd-fury.net! I'd also like to mention that themed posts don't need to be written - I'll also gladly accept podcasts, spoken word, poetry, animation, videos - anything you can imagine!*

Thanks guys!

* Except copyrighted materials and porn. Duh.
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Hi guys!

Apologies for missing my word for the last few Sundays - I've been sick, unfortunately. Small excuse, but I can't think about awesome words when I'm sick! Instead, however, I've got another few things to look into.

Sub roles and themed posters
A few people have expressed an interest in one, the other, or both, but haven't yet contacted me with any more details - I've been waiting for your emails!

Anyone who is interested in a substitute role or themed posting is welcome to apply! Substitute roles are for anyone that would like to post when regular posters won't be available, when regular posters no longer want to post, or when regular posters lax in duties. Themed posters are people who do regular themed posts on an area they're interested in or study, or anything at all - as long as it holds a theme. This could be anything from 'science words' and 'words derived from Latin' to more specific topics like 'words from games' or 'words that rhyme with purple and orange.'

Anyone interested, please send an email to 1word1day@nerd-fury.net with a sample or two of what youcan do!

Spam
I've been advised by brbplayingchess that some cheeky buggers have somehow bypassed the restriction on posters. The posts have been deleted, and apologies for it. I've emailed LJ to ask how it could have happened, and am awaiting their reply. I have considered making the community invite-only/approved members only, but I think it might be too tight a restriction. I guess we'll just keep a close eye on the spam, and keep banning as needed. Once again, I ask for my posters to keep an eye on their replies and delete spam as necessary.

Twitter and iPhone
A little while ago, I broached the subject of manning a Twitter feed and a Facebook feed. The lovely brbplayingchess is looking after our Facebook feed, and I have just set up 1word_1day on Twitter. I still need to work out how to go about crossposting, or even if my legendarily poor short-term memory will result in me forgetting to update it (I may need a trusted volunteer!), but feel free to follow now!

I also raised the idea of having an iPhone app to essentially crosspost from here to an RSS feed, in app form. With the new group of people following our little community, it might be an idea to raise it again. If anyone here has any experience in creating apps, or knows someone who would like to, can you please comment or email me at 1word1day@nerd-fury.net?

Opening the Gates!

Finally, I'm thinking of running a month where I open the gates and let everyone post their favourite words. Some people have previously expressed concerns about their FList being spammed. Others didn't want to open the comm to potentially harmful aspects. I like the idea of a Bring Your Word To Work Day, but am interested in feedback about how we can best ensure quality and no spam.

Thanks everyone for being such great members, and apologies again for the lack of wordy action on my behalf - I'm starting to feel better, and look forward to resuming my posts likely by nest week!

Spaaaam.

Hi guys,

It's like 3am here, and I am a little drunk, so  forgive any typos or sudden expressions of how much I love youse all, but can I ask that all posters please delete and ban all spammers they receive replies from in their posts, or at least alert me to them so I can remove them myself.

To everyone else, apologies for the spam - I can't delete it while I'm at work, and I don't have time to trawl every post every few days to make sure there's no spam. I don't get updates for every comment - only for the posts I make - so I need you all to keep an eye out.

Thanks all!

Also, I love youse all!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Some of you might have seen a few spammy posts dotted about here and there. I've deleted four from the same spammer, and marked them for the appropriate group to check into.

I suppose it's the price you pay when you get spotlighted, but I have a favour to ask you: whenever any of you (posters especially - you guys should get notifications of all comments!) see any spam, please let me know by PM or comment in one of my posts tagged 'nerdfury' or 'maintenance.' That way, I can remove them and flag them as spam as soon as possible.

Thanks guys!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Regrettably, I neglected to pay attention to numbers both before and after the Spotlight shone itself on our little community, but I'm pretty sure we didn't have over 3,000 people here before!

If you stumbled into the light, welcome! It's great to have you here!

Don't forget to take a moment to have a look at the community profile to see what we're all about, and if anyone is interested in sticking their hand up t be a volunteer poster, a themed poster (Words about science! Or language! Or insults!) just let me know. I'm also always keen on feedback, suggestions and, of course, your ideas for stuff we can implement here. If you do, please bear in mind that unless I posted, I won't know if you commented with feedback or a suggestion - so try and PM me directly if you can, or comment on one of the many words tagged with 'nerdfury.'

Don't forget to check out our Facebook page while you're at the profile!

Once again, welcome to you all!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Hi guys!

A little while ago, I mentioned a couple of ideas about having a Facebook, Twitter and iPhone feed of the community. A few of you mentioned interest in the Facebook option, so I created a new 1word1day Facebook group!

As I'm sure you've noticed, there's nothing in there yet, but I don't quite know how to go about posting. I considered just copy/pasting everything in each day, then considered if I should start it from January onwards or from today onwards, then considered if I should see if any of the posters would mind copying their posts over if I make you mods of there, too?

Anyway, feel free to weigh in with opinions and feedback. Right now, it's off to bed!

Oh, and so no one panics, the Facebook page will generally be a mirror of here, and in no way a replacement. ;)
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
(I hope you all read that title in a Dr. Farnsworth voice!)

I just received the following email from the good folks at LJ HQ:

Congratulations!
We would love to place your community, 1word1day, in the LJ Spotlight, beginning August 9, 2010.

Spotlights generally last for seven days and result in increased activity, posts, and comments. They can also bring anywhere from hundreds to thousands of new members. If you don't already moderate posts in your community, you might want to do so during the spotlight period. Everything will calm down after it's over, but it's a good idea to keep an extra eye on things while you're in the spotlight.

If you don't want your community to be in the spotlight, please let us know by replying to this email and we'll shine our light elsewhere.

If you have any problems or questions during the spotlight period, please contact our Support team here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/submit.bml

Enjoy the spotlight!

So, we're gonna be Spotlighted! Now, here's the question - does anyone think there's anything we should do to prepare for it? Maybe a new theme? Or some changes to the profile page? Or some more/new rules?

Let me know what you think!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
 Hi guys!

I'm the mod of a couple of other communities, but those are all really, really dead. Like the deadest thing to ever stink up the joint, really. My point is, this is the first place I've looked after which has a user base above a handful, and an amount of activity above none, so I really have no idea if there's anything more I should be doing or if I'm doing okay. So, here's your chance to let me know what you guys want! I've been looking after this place for around six months now, so I think it's time for a checkpoint.

If you have any feedback, please comment. If you think there's something this place needs, or if you have any suggestions for ways to improve the place, or suggestions for anything else at all, please take a few moments to make your voice heard.

As always, criticisms that aren't constructive or just generally mean will be mocked and deleted, but I'm fairly certain that there'll be nothing but good vibes and constructive suggestions!

Also, I've had some ideas in the last couple of days that I think you might be interested in, and wanted your feedback. Firstly, how would you guys feel about theme weeks/months? A whole week or two (or more, but I don't see that happening) with themes? They could be words, terms or phrases that themed to science, internet terms, obsolete words, foreign terms that have made their way into English, animal kingdom, botany - whatever you guys like!

Secondly, I was considering having a period (again, one or two weeks, or even a month) where I open the gates to all posters to post their favourite words - any time they like!

So, guys, let me know what you think my my two ideas, and if you have any suggestions or feedback on anything else to do with this place. please comment!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Evening, folks.

Thanks for all your kind words last week about my injury - for anyone curious; my arm, hand, and wrist are pretty much better, though still very sore. On the plus side, I can at least type without issue now!

Thanks also for all your nice words on my vocal rendition of Sunday's word! It's something I'll definitely consider doing again for you. Anyone else that wishes to give it a try is more than welcome to! Anyone who records their word can send me a copy of the recording, and I can upload it to my personal space, and even edit out any awkward gaps or whatever for you.

If you want to host it yourself, I used This Site Right Here to create that neat little playback bar.

Onwards!

Dulcarnon [dull'kar-non]
noun

Definition
A dilemma; a person in a dilemma

Etymology
From Latin dulcarnon, corrupted from Arabic al'qarnayn 'two-horned,' 'bicornis, cornutus'; lit. ‘lord or possessor of the two horns.’

Literary First
Circa 1374: Chaucer Troylus iii. 882:
I [Crisseide] am til god me betire mynde sende, At a dulcarnoun ryst at myn wittis ende.

Usage
I find myself in a small dulcarnon, for two of our posters have revealed recently that they will be unable to post - [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword is heading off to the Alps, it seems, and won't be able to spare time from taking pretty pictures of mountains and fjords to post every week, and[livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey has mentioned that she's looking for a replacement for Fridays, as she no longer wishes to post.

So, my dulcarnon, is that I need someone to fill in for one temprarily, and one permanently! I know there were a few other people who expressed interest, so would any of you fine folks be interested in a temporary or permanent assignment?

To [livejournal.com profile] prettygoodword, I hope you have a fantastic time overseas! You must promise to post photos! And to [livejournal.com profile] cecilegrey, if you're still looking at bowing out, its been great having you and your great words here at the community!
[identity profile] nerdfury.livejournal.com
Hi folks!

So I was thinking today, and came up with a few ideas of varying difficulties that may or may not be awesome, and I'd like your ideas and feedback on three things I considered making up!

- A Twitter group for here. Do many of you fine folks have Twitter? Would you Follow a 1word1day Twitter feed? If so, what do you think is the best way to run it? Add the word each day followed by a link back to here?

- A Facebook group. Now, come on, all of you have Facebook, I'm sure! Facebook does more than 140 characters, so I guess posting the whole word would be suitable - but would that mean none of you will bother coming here any more if it's there?

- Finally, and this is the hardest suggestion, but potentially the most awesome - an iPhone app. A lot of people have iPhones, but I don't know how to write apps, and don't have the SDK for it. So, does anyone here have the ability to make, or know anyone who has the ability to make an iPhone app? Let me know!

Feedback appreciated!
