Chesterfield is a place, a kind of overcoat and a brand of cigarette. This Canada Day, I want to highlight it's unique usage in the former dominion.
It seems to be falling by the wayside, but, in Canada, a couch or sofa is sometimes called a chesterfield.
While chesterfield refers to a specific design commissioned by the Earl of Chesterfield, it became a generic term in Canada for a couch.
