I wish my university provided some sort of an ombudsman, because I had one hell of a job trying to get the school to understand that I planned to study abroad for a semester.

Hi there, I'm still here, and the above is true, I am studying abroad and leaving in two days. I should have regular access to a computer, so posting shouldn't be a problem, but if I miss a Tuesday, please don't fret, I'll be back the next week with an extra word. Good to see us up and running again!

Edit: Heavens, nouns are difficult! I'll start going for multiple sources from now on! Thanks, everyone!

An Ombudsman is more than just those, too. There's Ombudsman departments covering disputes between people and companies/types of companies, such as the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman, or others dealing with gas and electricity or various other general types of industry.

At the ISP I work, we get threats daily of "Give me what I want or I go to the Ombudsman!" Which is less of a threat than you'd think. The TIO usually tells people "... Did you ask your ISP for help? And they explained it's YOUR fault you have a $3000 bill? Go away."

Gosh, I never want to hear or see that word again. I'm at college and every teacher is talking about the ombudsman... while no one goes to talk with the person anyway. It just drives me mad.

there is also a slightly different kind of Ombudsman. for every ship in the navy there is at least one (usually a navy wife) Ombudsman who has a direct line of communication with the captain so that the other spouses can know what the ship is doing. more for networking than taking complaints.

(OT, but is your subject header a Diana Wynne Jones ref? Because if so, that's awesome.)
